Staying Alive

Church in Philadelphia

Sunday Evening, April 15, 2007

Bob Bradley

_________________________

Revelation 3:7-13

7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;

8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

John is writing the things that Jesus has told him to write unto the seven churches, which are in Asia.  As we talked about before, we know that John is out in the Asian Sea because of his testimony and preaching of the Word of God.  They put him out here trying to get rid of him.  They thought that he was going to die, but God had a plan for John while he was out there.

As I have said many times, it is great to live in the Will of God.  It is great when we can live where there is nothing between God and us.  Sometimes, things may appear to be dry.  Sometimes, things may appear to be hard, but when we are living as we should be living, then God has plan.  When God has a plan then all I need to do is just follow and listen to His voice.  When I do that, then things will work out exactly right.  The problem is many times that God has a plan, but we do not like the plan.  We look at the plan and God says the plan and we say, "What's next God.  I do not like plan A.  What's plan B?"  With God there is no plan B.  Either we accept it, do it, and be blessed, or we do not do it and we are not blessed.

John had learned that a long time ago.  He is speaking unto one of the churches.  Jesus Christ is speaking to John.  John is writing down the things having to do with a particular church that was in Asia.  This church's name was Philadelphia.  When you look at what the word 'Philadelphia' means, it means 'brotherly love.'    This church at Philadelphia was a church that was not a big church.  It probably was not a church that if we would look at the outside of it, we would not have thought a lot about it.  Here at Philadelphia, they had something here that was spectacular in that they loved each other, they were alive, and they were faithful.

If you take people that love one another, they will be alive.  They love one another because they are alive.  If we love one another, since we are alive, then we will be faithful.  This church was a very faithful church.  This church was doing many things for Jesus Christ and they were listening to His voice.  Notice these things; that Jesus, not only to this church but also to the other six churches, He addresses this letter to the angel of this church, as He does the other six churches.  He is telling John to write the letter unto the pastor.

Sometimes we do not consider how important the leadership of our church is.  I do not think we consider how important that a church has the pastor that God wants it to have.  I do not think we realize how important that is.  In the last thirty years, I have been at different places.  Many think that you can put anybody in that position.  They may be an eloquent speaker, they may have an education, and they may be well off financially; sometimes we think that we put people in those positions to be leaders in those things.  If we think that then we are very wrong.  My authority here on earth, as to what I may obtain here on earth, what I may have here on earth; my clothes here has noting to do with my ability to pastor.  We miss that sometimes.

Jesus is telling John to write this letter to the pastor.  Since He telling him that then it must be very important that the pastor here is expected to take this message and relate it, to preach it, or teach it unto the church.  When God speaks, God does not stutter.  When God speaks, then there is a reason, then there is a necessity for us as pastor, as leaders; and says that this is the message then God has a reason for that message.  I may not ever see it.  I may not ever know.

I have preached here before many times and in my mind I thought I knew where things were going sometimes but after I saw things work out; I found out that it is not my business to know where it is going and I cannot preach to individuals.  I cannot single this one out or you out and preach to you.  Instead, we preach to the whole congregation.  When we preach to the whole congregation, the message that God has given; some, in a particular message, they will rejoice.  Some that hear the Word of God in the same message they may be convicted.  Some people that hear the same message may be convicted of their sins and repent.

God knows what He is doing.  God uses the Word of God to bless His people, to convict His people, to save those that are lost; God does that.  That is why it is so important that we preach and teach the Word of God.  You cannot take an individual, who is not saved, put him in the office of a pastor, and expect him to preach unto you spiritual things because that is not going to happen.  He is not in contact with God.  God is not speaking unto him.  If God is not speaking unto him, then he cannot speak unto you the things that are coming from God.

I am telling you tonight that the leaders of our churches are very important.  If the pastor here at the Philadelphian church had not been in a place of authority, not only the Philadelphian church, but also these other churches, these messages that Jesus Christ spoke would have been sent to someone else other than the pastor.

This church here at Philadelphia was alive.  They were faithful.  The Bible says, "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things ..."  He said, "...write; These things saith he that is holy..."

John is writing the words of Jesus Christ unto a very faithful church, a church that is alive, a church that knows what it means to be born again, and a church that knows the voice of Almighty God.  The church here at Philadelphia, probably everyone that came here was not alive.

I know that we think that we must have one hundred percent of everybody that is on our books going in the same direction, if we are ever going to accomplish anything.  If you think that, you are wrong.  That will never happen.  I do not care what church that you attend.  You will never have one hundred percent of the body that is there always going in the same direction, because there are some people there that are not spiritual.  Some people do not care about spiritual things.  There are people there that do not care about these things.

That was the same way here at this church at Philadelphia.  However, the majority of this church was alive and they had been faithful to Almighty God.  The Lord is speaking unto John.  John was to take this message and give unto the pastor that was there and the pastor was going to take this message and tell the church.

The greatest times that we will ever have in our lives are when God speaks unto you and me.  When God speaks unto you and me, when we hear His voice, and we do those things that God asks us to do then that will be the greatest times that we will ever have in my life and in your life.

He says, "...he that is holy..."  The word holy is a great word.  When John writes down the word holy, we know that he is speaking about the Lord, but it means to be different, it also means different from everything else and everyone else all around.  It means to be set apart from everyone else.  He is talking about none other than Jesus Christ because He is the One that is talking.

I am glad that He is different.  He is different from all the others that have claimed to be a savior and a god.  Many have claimed that over the years, but He is different.  He is separated from all of them because He is God.  That is who is speaking and that is important.

Not only whom He is speaking to is important, but who is doing the speaking is important.  Not only is He holy, He is completely separated from everyone else and everything else; Jesus Christ is as far as sin goes.  He is separated from that.  He has no dealings with sin.  He is holy.  He is righteous.

He says here, "...he that is true..."  He that is truth compared to that which is opposite.  He that is truth compared unto that which is false.  He that is truth, He is genuine.  There are no flaws in Him.  He is total and complete truth.  The Bible tells us that Jesus is truth.  We know that He is the way, the truth and the life.  We know that He is truth.  Not only is He holy, not only is He separated from all the sin that is in this world, but--Thank God--He is truth.  There is nothing false about Him.  He is genuine within, without, from top, to bottom.  He is the One that is speaking unto John.  He is the One that is speaking unto you and me.  He is truth.  He is holy.  He is God.

The reason this is important is that if a church is going to be alive they have to be connected to the vine.  The branches, if we are alive, it is because we are connected to the vine.  If a church is alive, it is because they are connected, they are born into the family, or they are part of the family of God.  That makes us alive.  If I am not a part of the family of God, if I have never been born again today, then I am not alive spiritually.  I am dead.  What makes us alive today is us being in Jesus Christ and Him being in us.

Christianity is not a system of rules and regulations.  Christianity is not belonging to a church here on planet earth.  Christianity is Christ in us.  If I am alive spiritually, it is because Jesus Christ is on the inside and He has taken complete control of my life.  I am allowing Him to take complete control of my life and in doing so we become alive in Jesus Christ.  When He is alive in my life then He is alive in every part of my life.  The reason that we are dead today is because that we do not know who that He is.

"...he that is truth, he that hath the key of David..."  The key of David here symbolizes authority.

If you go back to Isaiah chapter 22, verse 22, you can see a good picture of that there.  When He speaks about the key of David, the One that is speaking to you and me tonight; the One that is holding the churches in His hands tonight: He has all authority tonight.  We need to understand that today, "...he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth..."

He is the one that has the authority that is going to say who goes to heaven and who is not going to heaven.  It is not going to depend upon the pope.  It is not going to depend upon some religious guy somewhere, but the One that is sitting upon the throne has the key of David.  He has the authority to open and to close, to shut and to open.  It is all up to Him.  We need to understand that if I am going to go to heaven, and if you are going to go to heaven, it is going to be because that the Lord Jesus Christ allows me to go and the only way that He is going to allow me to go is by being born into His family.  I cannot go any other way.  He is the One that opens and shuts.  He is the One that has the authority. He is the One that says who goes and who does not go.

This church was very evangelistic.  The Lord had opened many doors for this church.  These folks were walking through these doors by faith.

Many times in our lives, we want God to move when it is not time for God to move.  In other words, we want God to do things in our life sometimes, even though that God is going to do it; we want God to hurry up and do it.  Sometimes in my life, God wants to do something today and I do not want God to do it today, because I have some other thing that I want to do.

The greatest illustration we have of that is this; the children of Israel as they were leaving Egypt, they had a guide.  They had no idea where they were going.  They knew that they were going to a new land.  They had no idea where they were going.  The only way that they could get from Egypt to the land of Canaan was by following their guide.  Their guide was a cloud in the day and a pillar of fire at night.  The cloud moved in the day and the children of Israel were commanded to get up and move.  If the cloud stopped, the children of Israel were commanded to stop.  If the pillar of fire moved at night, they were commanded and they knew that they had to move because they did not know where they were going.

Many times the pillar stops and we want to go on.  Many times the pillar moves and we want to stay behind.  It is very important that when God opens doors for us then that is the time that we must step through those doors.  You might ask why.  What makes it important when God says to go and do NOW?  What makes that important?

The children of Israel could have stopped when the cloud was moving and, no doubt, some of them did.  However, the cloud would have gone on and they would have been consumed.  They would have wondered off and they would have no idea where they were going.  Would that have been God's fault?  No.  It would not have been God's fault.

God says it is time to move.  God says it is time to make this step.  God says that He opens the door of evangelism, sometimes we step through, and sometimes we don't step through.  We either step through, in our own personal life or as a church, when God opens them, or that door will be closed and we will never have an opportunity to step through that door again.  I know what I am talking about.  I have seen it happen.  God speaks unto pastors.

Many years ago, I was going to a church that God spoke unto the pastor about building a building.  The place was full.  People were everywhere.  God was opening the doors.  There was property available.  The money was there and available.  God was moving.  The door of opportunity was opened, but the leadership did not want to take that step of faith and walk through that door by faith.  What happened?  Nothing happened.

God opened the door and those that were in authority would not step through that door by faith.  The things just fizzled out.  It took four, five, six, seven years; but they went from a hundred and some down to eight or ten because people that had the responsibility to be spiritual leaders was not spiritual enough, did not have enough back bone to stand up and say, "God is speaking, God is saying this is what we need to do."  When God says that this is what we need to do, we know that God will provide everything that we need to do to accomplish His Will.

If God wants us to build a building here and spend two million dollars, if that is God's Will then He will provide the money to do that.

On the other side of that, I have seen people spend a million dollars on a building and they cannot pay for it today.  Do you know why?  It was because God was not in it to begin with.  God does not tell me to build a seven hundred fifty dollar building that I cannot pay for--God does not do that.

God opens doors of evangelism for us.  God opens great doors in order for us to work and when we move we cannot fail.  When we walk through the doors that God opens, by faith, it is an impossible for us to fail.  When we fail, it is because we look at all the obstacles and say that we cannot do it.  That is when we fail.

The Bible says, "…he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth..."  God opens ministries for the church here at Philadelphia.  It is God who opens ministry doors here for this church.  I cannot open doors and make situations open up that is going to glorify God.  When God opens doors, and when we walk through those doors, they glorify God.

The Bible says this, "I know thy works..."  It is great that God knows what we are doing.  He is writing this letter to the minister, to the angel.  This church is alive and Jesus Christ wants this church to continue to be alive.  Since he is writing this letter to the minister, pastor, or angel; do you think that the minister or the pastor has any responsibilities himself?  Of course, he does.  If a church is going to continue to be spiritual or alive then it cannot be lead by a dead pastor.  In order for the church to continue to be alive, it needs spiritual leaders that are alive.

What the pastor needs to do…

Be alive…

If the pastor is going to continue to be alive, then there is going to be some things that he is going to have to do.  Since he is telling the pastor to relate this message to the church, the pastor is the one that should be the spiritual leader who keeps the church alive.  That pastor has some responsibilities to be alive himself.

Read the Bible….

For the pastor to be alive then he must live in the Word.  [Everyone agrees]  There is no way that I can be alive; there is no way that I can teach you spiritual things if I never open my Bible.  If I never open my Bible and take time to read and to study then I cannot teach you those spiritual things that are here.  There is no way that God is going to speak unto me the things that here so that I can speak unto you the things that will bless you, that will help you, that will encourage you; there is no way that will ever happen if I don't read the Bible.

Pray…

If the pastor is going to be a leader who will keep the church alive, he is going to be someone that prays.  If a pastor will never pray, communicate with God, then there is no way that he can lead you in a spiritual way where you can continue to be alive.  He can tell you how great it is to fellowship with God.  However, there is no way that he can do that if he does not spend some time praying.  Not only does he need to be alive, he needs to be living in the Word; but also he needs to be praying

Teach and Preach the Word…

I cannot live a sinful life six days a week, come in here, and be a spiritual leader on Sunday.  A pastor that is going to lead a church to continue to be alive, and into revival is a pastor that has to teach and preach the Word.  It is the Bible, the Truth.  The Word will continue to keep us alive.

We have many Christians today on life support because they are separated from the only thing that will keep them alive--the Truth.  There are many people sitting in churches, many Christian people, I believe they are saved; that are on life support tonight because their pastor has 'sold out.'  He no longer preaches and teaches the Truth; it is more about ball games, activities, doing good things, status quota, we have what we need and we don't need anything else, we don't want anybody else to come, we don't want to have to do anything else, we have got what we want; therefore, we just cave in.

What happens if pastors do not do those things?

The results…

We talk about grace, mercy, and the goodness of God.  However, in many places, you are not going to hear anything about being faithful, or separated from sin.  You are not going to hear anything about not committing the acts of sin, drinking, lying, cheating, and stealing.  It is sad to see what goes on in places tonight.  People in the pews are dying because they are not eating the only thing that is going to keep them alive which is the Truth

Some of them are your family.  Some of them are my family.  You talk to some, they will call, they will drop by and they will say, "Preacher, this is happening and that's happening."

Personal experience…

Years ago, I would have never said this until I saw something happen right here at Campbell Chapel since the time that I have been here that I will never do anymore.  If someone from the church down the road wants to come here, I am not going to tell him or her to go back down there.  I did that and those individuals do not go anywhere today.  That individual is important.  Their little children are important.

We are hung-up on things sometimes.  If people want to come here to church, I am not going to encourage them to leave.  I am not going to beg them to leave.  If God is leading them here, I am going to love them, I am going to help them, I am going to support them, I am going to do everything I can to help them.  If the church down the road does not like it, they can lump it.

People are dying in their sins.  We are not alive anymore.  Pastors no longer read their Bibles.  We get on the Internet, punch a few buttons, print a sermon then get up and read it.  However, it is as ‘dead as a hammer’ because probably whoever wrote it was dead themselves.  We never pray and people are dying.

Your family is dying.  My family is dying.  Children are dying.  Do we care?

If a pastor is going to lead a church and that church is going to continue to live, the pastor must be someone that lives in the Word, prays, teaches and preaches the Truth.  It is impossible for me to teach you spiritual things if I do not live what I preach.  It is a great responsibility for a pastor to encourage, or exhort God's people.  A pastor should encourage, or exhort those who come to church.  Exhort means to lift up.

Sheered sheep…

Many times pastors want to club others all the time.  Sheep do not need sheered every service.  If you sheer a sheep every service then after a  while he will be a terrible looking thing.  They are going to get a little rough spot here and little rough spot there; if that happens every service, they are going to rough looking and susceptible to disease and even death.

Encouragement…

We need to encourage people.  It is great to encourage those who need encouragement.  It is great to brag on people and tell them that they are doing a good job.  That encourages them to go on.

I am own worst enemy.  I am harder on me than any of you are.  You do not understand that because you are not a preacher.  I am a lot harder on self than any of you have ever been.  It is great when the Lord comes along and says, "Hey, you didn't do such a bad job.  Even though you may have thought that you made a complete idiot out of yourself, this is the way I wanted it done."

It is the same thing with you.   If we are going to continue to be alive then we must have faithful leaders.  If I am not faithful then the church starts dying.

If you did not see me on Wednesday night, and you get here and ask the deacons, "Where's Bob at?"  They say, "I don't know.  He didn't show up."  You start looking for me after service and you cannot find me.  Then about noon tomorrow, you find me somewhere.  I have been over at Lake Vesuvius fishing and caught a great bunch of fish and they are good too.  The next service you are going to think, if I am not dealt with, that it is okay to go fishing and not come to church.  Hey, the pastor does it.  If the pastor does it, it must be okay.  That is what is going on in many places tonight.

We are seeing pastors take their kids to ballgames on Wednesday night right here in this community, and not coming to the house of God.  We see pastors and pastor's wives, running up and down the street, on church night, jogging.  Do you think that is going to lead a church into revival?  Do you think that is going to lead a church to be more spiritual?  It is not going to happen.

Since it is my responsibility, to live in the Word, to pray, to encourage, to teach and preach the truth; if that is my responsibility; then there must be some responsibility upon those that are listening.  If God requires that out of me, then God also requires that out of you.

If it takes that to make me alive, then it takes the same thing to make you alive.  The great thing about life, being alive and being happy, to be filled with joy, the great thing about that is when each of you are alive and we are all alive then it is a fun place to be.  It is an exciting place to be.  There is a lot of electric in the air.  There is a lot of activity in the air because when we are all alive that means that the Spirit of God has complete control of each one of us.  When we come to this house to worship  Him, He will speak to you and to me and tell us exactly what we need to do here to worship Him that will bring glory to Him that our spiritual life will continue to be alive.

The greatest blessing that I get sometimes is not what I do, but it is by listening to what you do.  That is a tremendous blessing to me, to hear someone bragging about the Lord.  Stating what the Lord is doing for them and the great things that are happening to them, moving up and cutting off some of the old sinful things that they use to do.  That is exciting to me.  That makes us more alive.

Congregation’s responsibility

We need to ask ourselves.  Since he is speaking unto the pastor, since it is the pastor's responsibility to preach, to teach, to pray, and to live the Truth; those that he is preaching and teaching to have the responsibility to listen.  Not only has the responsibility to listen but to obey, not me, but Him.  If He is speaking through me then He is speaking, and not I.

Since that is the case then we need to be mindful to Him.  When we do those things, we can be a church that will continue to be alive.

I am glad that we are alive here.  Does that mean that everybody that comes to Campbell Chapel is alive?  No.  However, the majority of us are alive.  If the majority of this church were not alive, we would not be where we are at today.  We would not be where we are at today spiritually.  We would not be where we are at today financially.  We would not have the material things that this church has.  We would not be there if the majority, of this church, was not alive.

The great thing, for those that are alive, is that you know that.  You can see what God is doing and you know how exciting that is.  You know all that.  The sad part about it is those that are dead do not have a clue.

Those that are dead question, "Why do we have to do that?  Why does he want to do that?  Why do we need to do that?  We have carpet on the floors.  We have seats in here.  We have plenty of parking.  Why do we need to do anything else?"  That is what dead people say.

People that are alive they want to step through those doors that God opens by faith; they want to step through those doors because they know, it was proven in their life and their Christian experience.  They know that when they step through those doors, they know that they cannot fail.

This is our watch.  This is our time, in the history of Campbell Chapel.  Whether we have ten years here, fifty years, or a hundred and fifty years; it is our time.  We are responsible for our time that we have here.

What is hanging in the balance are these little guys, and this little guy over here, this little guy over here, these little folks sitting back here; these young people are hanging in the balance.  The future of Campbell Chapel Church depends upon us.  The success or the downfall of Campbell Chapel Church depends upon whether we step through the doors by faith, when God opens the doors, or whether we say that is too much work, that is too much effort.  The success or the downfall of this church depends upon us.  Right here, those hundred that come or what ever we have that come here; it is up to us.  We either step through those doors by faith or God opens the door and we say, "Not now, Lord.  Not today, Lord.  Don't move the cloud today.  I'm tired."  We do not have time for rest.  We are going to be able to rest forever in heaven; let us do a little work today.

I know that there are times that we need to re-evaluate things.  I know that there are times that we need to get alone and do some serious soul searching.  Jesus Christ did.  I know that we need to.

There is no one here at this church that is overworked.  There is no one here dying of exhaustion because you have done too much.  There is no one here going blind because you have read too much.  There is no one losing their voice because you have prayed too much.  There is no one here that is going to have to have surgery on your legs because you knelt too much.  That is not happening.

Do you really want Campbell Chapel to continue to be a church that is alive?  If you cannot say, “Amen” to that, then you do not care about yourself, your family, or your children and you do not care about the success of the gospel.  We should care and we should want things to be alive.

The church that is alive is the only church that is doing anything for the glory of God.  A dead church is not doing anything that is bringing glory to God.  A dead church is a church that is not seeing anyone saved.  A dead church will never see anybody saved because there is not anything in that church that is alive that will produce life.  It is not there.  Life is so important for us today, to continue to be alive and remain alive.  Our own spiritual life depends upon it.  It is our watch and it is quickly passing by.

It is our watch.  When I stand before God, as we go to heaven, I want to have something that I can take off my head that I received at the judgment seat of Christ that I can cast at His feet and say, “Thank you, Lord.”  I want to praise Him for all the good things that He has done.

That is what the elders were doing.  That is what you and I was doing.  We are the elders that He is talking about in Revelation.  We cast our crown before Him.  There are many who will be there, but many are not going to have anything to offer.

Continue to be alive

What do you want to do?  Do you want to continue to be alive?  We are here.  We are alive.  Do you want your own personal life to continue to be alive?

If you want that, there are things that you must do.  If you will do those things, you can continue to be alive.

God is speaking.  God is calling.  God is alive.  God wants His people to be alive.  I want us to be alive.  I am glad that we are alive.  I thank God that we are alive.

I am going to do everything that I can to lead this church in the direction that God leads me.  I know that does not satisfy everybody.  I understand that.  When God opens the door of ministry for us and we do not walk through that door, if I do not recommend that we walk through that door, then I have failed you.  That is a big responsibility on my shoulders.

You do not have a clue about the responsibility and the weight.  I am not complaining, but I am saying that when I, or any pastor, recommends the church to take a big step then they had better make that step.  If we do those things then God blesses us.  If we do not do those things then God does not bless.

When God opens the door and leadership says we need to move then the burden is on you.  If a pastor says that God says that we need to do this or go this direction and you do not want to go, then it is not my responsibility anymore.  Then this church begins to die.

I do not want to be dead.  I want to be alive tonight.

I had no idea that I was going to talk about that, but I make no apologies for that.    My responsibility is great and so is yours.

If it is my responsibility to teach and preach to you the Truth, then it is your responsibility to be here to hear me preach and teach you the Truth.  When we do that, God speaks unto, directs us, and opens doors for us then the burden is upon you to walk through those doors by faith.  God does it collectively many times.

I want to continue to be alive.

I am glad that we are alive here.  I am glad that the Spirit of God is here.  I am glad that He is moving.

We have no time to stop, no time to let up.  We have no time to say that I am tired.  We have no time to say, “What does it matter?”  The only thing that we need to be doing is to continue.

When the cloud moves we need to move.  When the cloud stops then we need to be stop.  When God opens the doors for us to minister, and the opportunities that He opens up for us, and you step through those doors and if we continue to do that then God will continue to bless.

However, when we stop doing that, then Campbell Chapel will die.  As a church, when we quit walking through the doors that God opens for us then we begin to die

I do not want that for you.  I do not want that for me.
