Journey to the Cross

Day 8 – Day 14

 Wednesday, March 7, 2007

 Bob Bradley

John 12:21-33

21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying , I have both glorified it , and will glorify it again.

29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it , said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

Day 8:  Luke 22:7-23

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it , and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

“The Lord’s Supper”

Our study this week on our “Journey to the Cross” deals with the Thursday night before Jesus is going to die on Friday.  These events that take place down through the week, deal with those last hours of Jesus Christ's life.  He knows what is going to happen.  He has told His disciples that the hour has come.  It was time for Him to be lifted up; it was time for Him to die.  The disciples did not understand what was going on.  They knew He was Christ, they knew He was their Messiah; but their understanding of things that when the Messiah would come, that He would go to Jerusalem, sit upon the throne of David, He would throw out the Romans, and He would set up to rule and reign.  That is what they thought was going to happen, and that is going to happen one day, but they just could not see the suffering of the Messiah.  He is trying to tell them that this is what is going to happen.  It's quite remarkable that as He's preparing to die in a matter of hours what He's doing.  He is telling His disciples here in His last hours that they need to love one another.  If that were not important, He would not be saying these things in the last hours of His life.

As I have studied this week, about this little study “Journey to the Cross;”  I thought back a few years ago when the kids were smaller and when we would go on vacation; we would pack our bags, load all the kids up, and we would start down the road then we would get to thinking, “Did I do this?  Did I do that?  Did I turn the stove off?  Do we have everything that we need?”  Sometimes we would get down the road a few miles and realize that we forgot something or forgot somebody.

The journey that we were taking, we were planning to come back.  We were going to stay a while but then we were planning to come back.

As Jesus was getting ready to take this journey, He was going to the cross, but He was not coming back.  He was going to die.

I wonder if we knew that in the next twenty-four hours that we were going to die; what would we be doing tonight?  Would we be in church?  Would we be at home? Would we be wringing our hands?  Would we be praying somewhere?  What would we be doing?

I think that if we look at the life of Jesus Christ, it will help us to be prepared for that hour when that time comes.   I do not know when that time is going to come for us.  I know that we are on a journey.  I know as we live here on planet earth that we are on a journey.  So was Jesus Christ; He was on a journey.

As His journey here on earth was going to end in death and He knew that; but as you read chapters 13-17 of John's gospel, you will find out what Jesus said, taught, and who that He spent time with in the final hours of His life.  If you read John 13 you will find out that He spent time with His disciples, He spent time with those fellows that He loved, and people that were close to Him; He spent time with them.  Furthermore, He spent time with His heavenly Father because He knew that His journey here on earth was about to end.  He knew that He was going to come to an end very shortly.

I wonder what you and I would be doing.   Would we be spending time more in praying?  What would we be doing?  We need to ask ourselves that question.  This could be our last twenty-four hours.  This could be the day and the last service that we will attend in a church.  This could be the last time that we will ever gather here on a Wednesday night.  This could be the last time for us, for me or for you, any of us.  We need to ask ourselves, “Are we really prepared for our final destiny?”  Jesus is giving us an example of what we should be doing.

He spent with the disciples and He spent time praying.  Down through the week we read about the Lord's Supper.  This is happening on Thursday night.  The Passover was/is a Jewish holiday where the Jews remember the time that the death angel passed over them in the land of Egypt.

After all the plagues came except one and God told them, “I'm going to send one more plague.”  All the first-born in the land of Egypt was going to die that night.  He told the children of Israel that if they wanted to live that they needed to go out and kill a lamb, take the blood of the lamb and put it on the doorpost.  When the death angel came, he would pass over them when he saw the blood.  Jesus was spending time with His disciples in this feast.

He is here, they are celebrating the Passover, and remembering the time, that God, in a miraculous way, spared their first born in the land of Egypt.  Not only that, but as we read we will find out that He also washed the disciples feet.  The same day that the supper ended, we know that He did that.  We can learn some great things from this Passover.

I know that we were not in Egypt.  I know that we were not there, but isn't it great that it still yet takes the blood.  Death is going to come our way one day and the only thing that is going to save us from eternity in a lake of fire; is the blood of the lamb.  That is the only thing that is going to save us.  Just as the blood of a lamb saved the first-born in the land of Egypt, the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ saves us today.  That is what rescues us and keeps us safe.  Jesus knows that He is going to die, but they did not understand.  He is going to explain some things to them.

I read somewhere that the Passover feast was held with close friends and/or family.  It was not usually held with enemies.  You usually did not invite the enemy over to eat the Passover feast.  Jesus did not do things how we normally do things.  Our love has to surpass any kind of human love that we can muster up here and Jesus Christ’s love did that.  He loved Judas.

Even though He knew that Judas had actually already made the deal to betray Him, even though Jesus knew that it had already happened, He still sat there and ate with Him.

As this night progresses, as they celebrate the Passover and the Lord's Supper is instituted here; He gives the cup, breaks the bread, and then tells them, “This is my body which is broken for you.  This is the cup and testament of my blood.” and so forth.  He is trying to do something that we need to do more today.

I thought about this for the last several days.  If we could ever get people to stop being afraid, it would be awesome what we could accomplish.  Some have said, “Preacher, I was afraid to sing because I thought that I was unable to sing as well as someone else.”  Or “Preacher, I was afraid to testify unto my co-worker because I was afraid that I might get embarrassed.”  Or “Preacher, I was afraid to take this step of faith to do this or that.”  If we could ever get people just to understand that we do not have to be afraid, we do not have anything to be afraid of; it would be awesome what can and will be accomplished when we get to the point that we are no longer afraid.

Do you know what fear does?  Jesus is trying to calm them because he knew these people would be filled with fear and because of all things that were about to happen in a matter of hours.  He was telling them some things here that, I think, He was trying to calm their fears because He knew what fear does; not only to them, but also to us.

If everyone sitting here would inventory their lives just for a few moments, it would not take but just a couple of minutes, we could all say that there have been times in my life that we were afraid to do something.  One of the biggest fears today in the church is being afraid of failure.  We are afraid that we will fail.  We are afraid that we will mess up.  We are afraid that if I take this step of faith and if it messes up; then I am going to be so afraid and I am going to be so ashamed that I messed up.  If that is the case, if we all take that attitude in our Christian life then there will never be anything accomplished for Jesus Christ.  The work of the kingdom of God will stop, if I take that attitude and you take that attitude that we are always afraid.

There are going to be times that we will mess up.  We do not have a crystal ball that we can look into and know for sure that this is what we need to do.  Even though that God leads us, guides us, and directs us, I do not have something that we can look into here and God does not come down, write with His finger on a rock for me, and tell me what I need to do.  However, He expects me to live by faith.  When He speaks unto me, He expects me not to be afraid.  He expects us to step out by faith to do those things that He asks us to do.

The disciples here are going to be scared to death.  He is trying to comfort them.  He is trying to help them here.  It is amazing what we do sometimes.

Day 9:  Luke 22:24-30

26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

“Who is the Greatest?”

Our lesson here was about who was going to be the greatest.  They just celebrated the Passover, He has just instituted the Lord's Supper, He has just washed the disciples feet, and now they are sitting around arguing over who is going to be the greatest.  That is something that He deals with here.  He tells them that the Gentiles look at things that way.  They want to be big and they want to have all the authority; but He tells them that those that are greatest are those that serve.

We think sometimes that those that are in high positions or those that are very influential in our churches or in our community; that they are someone great.  However, in the eyes of God, those that are the greatest in His eyes are those that serve.  Those that will serve other people and have the heart of a servant, those that will not care to wash other people's feet, those that will not care to do things that other folks would not want to do.

He is going to die in just a matter of hours, but here He is and there is an argument about who is going to be the greatest.  He tells them that they did not need to be arguing about who is going to be the greatest but they needed to have a servant's heart.  They needed to be servants because He had just set the example for them about what they needed to be doing and how that they needed to do it in their lives and their service for Him.

That is something that we need to learn today.  If God is going to bless our lives individually, if God blesses our churches, it will be because that we have the heart of a servant.  It will not be because we order people around.  It will not be because that we stick our chest out and say that I hold this position or I have this title.  The greatest people in our churches today are people that do things that you do not know anything about.  The greatest people that are going to have some of the greatest rewards in heaven are going to be people that did some things that many times that no one else knew anything about except them and the Lord.  I have known some wonderful people before that did do many things and they did not want anyone else to know.  Many times many offerings and many donations have been given; many people that have done some awesome things to help other families, some work and things that no one else would do; but yet they didn't want credit for it.  God blesses that kind of effort.  God blesses us when we have a servant's heart, when we truly want to serve other people then God will bless us.

On the other side of that, I do not care what position you hold.  You can brag about how much you know, what you have accomplished and what you have given and about the  plaques that you may have on your walls; sometimes all those things are driving us further away from God.  I am not saying anything against education because we all need it and I need more of it.  However, the greatest thing that we need to have today is a servant's heart and to get to the place in life that we do whatever the Lord will ask us to do.

Many people wants to be the Sunday school superintendent or the Bible teacher, or the one that is directing or leading whatever; but if you ask them to cut grass, use the weed eater, sweep the parking lot, or clean the commodes downstairs; they don't want to do that.  Many folks want to do things when and where other people can see them.

I use to have some people working for me that they would not hit a lick until they would see me coming.  However, as soon as they saw me coming they would grab a shovel out of somebody else's hand or a tool and they would just work like a toe-head until I went out of sight again then they would just quit again.  I knew what was going on and it does not take long to figure out people like that.  Folks like that already have their reward.

When we just seek glory and praise from men then we have all the reward that we will ever have.  Jesus is telling us to have a servant's heart.  Let us serve other people.  I have heard pastors get up, there would be six or eight of them around, and they start bragging on how many times that they have preached this year, or how many that they have saved.  They did not save anybody.  We do not save anybody.  We might preach and ten people may be saved but we do not save anybody.  It is sad when we have to start blowing our own horn.  When we are servants; God will reward us and God will reward in great way.

Day 10:  John 13:1-17, 34-35

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

“Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet”

Washing feet was a task left up to the servants.  It was not up to the owners’ of the home or those influential people to wash the guests’ feet.  Jesus tells us and shows us that we need to love one another and by loving one another, we prove that we love one another by serving one another.

As with many things in life, there is not a lot show with it.  A lot of things we do in life that we need to do in life; nobody will ever know about except you and God.  That is the great thing about this.  God is the one that is going to reward us one day.  God blesses us today.  God gives us breath today.  God takes care of us today.  What does it matter if God leads me and leads you to do something that nobody else needs to know anything about?

So many times when we do something, we think that everybody else has to know.  If we do something for somebody, nobody else has to know.  God already knows.  He is the one that matters anyway.  I have seen people giving in their offerings; they would want to wave whatever bill they had in front of everybody and show how much that they were giving.  That is sad when we get that kind of attitude that we want people to look at us.

We need to be a servant.  If He washed the disciples’ feet then we ought to wash people's feet.  The teaching here goes beyond just the little act of washing feet.  We need to be humble.  We should not be ashamed to do anything that God asks us to do.  We need to be pruned before we start growing.  We have to be made low.  Many times, we are lifted up in pride that we cannot do anything.  Therefore, the Lord must bring us down to a place where we realize that we need to be servants and that we are not any better than anyone else is.  If we do those things, He asks us to do without patting ourselves on the back, or bragging about how great that we are; those things that we do in secret, God will reward us openly for those things.  We do not need to be seeking the praise of men but we need to have a humble heart, and a humble spirit.  We will not be too good to do anything that God asks us to do.

Do you really think that you are too good to do something that God asks you to do?  You should not think that!  If you think like that, you are going to be chopped down a notch or two.  If God asks us to do something, then we are not too good to do it.  If we have that kind of pride in our lives then we are going to get hit head on with something because God will bring us down.

Day 11:  John 13:2, 21-30

27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.

“Judas the Betrayer”

Judas has been with the Lord about three years or so.  Jesus knew all along whom that it was who was going to betray Him.  Even when He chose Judas, He knew who Judas was and what he was going to do, but He chose Him.  Judas was one of the twelve.  He was one of those that saw the Lord do many great things.  He ate with Him, he slept right where they were at and he traveled with them.  He saw many great things.

Do you remember when the sister anointed the Lord's feet with ointment?  Judas gets upset because of the price of the ointment.  That should tell us something about Judas.  Judas was not worrying about worshiping Jesus Christ.  Judas was worrying about the money.  He was worrying more about money and the temporal things than he was worshiping Jesus.  Judas made the statement that we should have took this, sold it and give it to the poor.  Jesus said to let her alone because she done this against His burial and so forth.  Judas lays his plans to betray Jesus Christ.

He knows that chief priests, scribes and elders are trying to figure out a way that they can take Jesus without causing uproar.  There are probably a million or two people in around Jerusalem at this time because of the feast of Passover.  It was a very busy time.  Judas went and said, “I know where He is.  I know His habits.  I know where He goes. I know all about Him.  What will you give me if I betray Him unto you?”

Have you ever been betrayed?  Have you ever really had someone that you were close to sell you out?  Have you ever been there?

I have.  It changes how we deal with people.  Judas is going to betray Him.  The great thing about the Lord here is that the Lord knew three years before what Judas was going to do, but you will never read anywhere here that Jesus ever treated Judas any other way except in a good way.

That is what we need to do today.  People do betray us.  People do things to us.  They take advantage of us, lie to us, lie about us, and sell us out.  I have had it done in the corporate world on many occasions.   People wanted to go up the corporate ladder so they will run over you, betray you, lie to you, and lie about you.

However, we need to get to the place in life that we just simply know and understand that when we will follow Jesus Christ that everything will be all right.

Even today, there are people that do not like me and there are people that do not like you.  You may think that people love you but you are dead wrong.  There are folk that do not like you.  With the Lord's help over the years, I have really tried and spent a lot of time working on treating those people the same as I treat anybody else.  Do I watch them?  Sure I do.  Do I watch their steps and conversations?  They will try to get you to do something or say something.

Even though there are people that hate you, even though there are people that have tried to kill you, even though people have lied to you, lied about you, and took advantage of you; you can still yet love them.  You can speak to them when you see them.  Sometimes, they do not like that.

I go out of my way when I see someone that tries to run and hide from me so I chase them until they shake hands with me.  I want people to know that I am not mad at them.  I want people to know that I do not hold grudges any longer.  I do not do that anymore.  People can do their dirty tricks and all that they want to, but living a Christian life is bigger than that.  It is more to me than that and I do not want anybody, not even my worst enemy, to think that I hold grudges because I do not.

Jesus did not either.  He knew that Judas had already betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver.  When you read the Old Testament, you will find the scriptures testifies and tells us that one of His familiar friends would betray Him.  It had to be someone that was real close to Jesus.  It had to be one of the twelve.  It did not have to be Judas.  I have heard people say that Judas had to do what he did, but Judas did not have to do what he did.  Judas chose to do what he did.  It is a pitiful story.  When you read the whole story of Judas' life, some things happened here that Judas had not plan on.  I do not think that Judas thought that they were going to kill Him.  I think that Judas thought that he could force Jesus' hand.  Judas had seen all that He had done.  I think that Judas was just going to try to force Jesus into going ahead, setting up His kingdom, getting things under way, so that he could be the treasurer in a whole lot bigger area and have a whole lot more things going on.  I do not think that Judas ever thought that things would get to the place to where they would actually take Jesus Christ out and crucify Him.

We are looking back at the story, but Judas and the others did not understand that this was going to happen.  I am not trying in any way to say that what Judas did was right, because it was not.  He did a horrible sin.  When they came and got Jesus in the garden, they came to get Him with swords and no doubt hundreds of soldiers.  When they took Him to Annus' house and Caiaphas' house and they spit upon Him and beat Him and so forth; throughout that night.  The next morning Judas brought the money back, threw it down, and said, “Hey, here's your money back.  I did not know that this is what was going on.  Here's your money back.”  It did not change anything.  The Bible says that he repented him of himself and that means he was sorry for what he did but he was not sorry that he had sinned.  He was sorry that this thing had worked around the way that it was but he was not repenting to the place where he was repenting and asking the Lord to save Him.  We know that he did not do that.

If you read in the book of Acts, after Jesus dies and He rose from the dead, the disciples are getting ready to replace Judas.  It speaks about how Judas betrayed the Lord and how that he went out, put a rope around his neck, jumped over a cliff, hit on the rocks and the Bible says and all his bowels gushed out.  Judas died a very horrible death.  Even though all these things happened, Jesus, in the three years that He dealt with Judas, you will never read in the scriptures that He ever treated him any different than He did anybody else.  That is a good lesson for you and me.

Day 12: Mark 14:26-31

31 But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

“Peter’s Denial Predicted”

The Lord tells them that one is going to betray Him and He is going to die.  Peter gets up and says, “I'll fight for you.  They may put me in prison, and they may kill me, but I will never deny You.”  Peter really meant that.

How many times in your life have you ever said, “I'll never do that.”  Then you ended up doing exactly what you said that you would never do.  We have all done that at some time in our Christian life.

Peter was sincere.  He was serious that he would never deny the Lord.  The Bible tells us that our hearts are very wicked.  We do not know our own hearts.  Jesus tells Peter here that before the cock crows he is going to deny Him three times that he even knew Him.  Peter was serious and sincere in what that he was saying.  However, Peter did not know about what was about to transpire.

Let us not be judgmental towards people.  Many times people will say, “I would never do that. I would never have handled that the way so and so did.”  Until you face what brother so and so is facing or sister so and so is facing; you do not know what you will do.

I had someone ask me the other day, “How would you react if one of your children died? ...or your wife died?”  I told him that I think I know how I would react, but I really do not know how I would react because I have never been down that road before.  I know the grace of God is sufficient.  I know that it is.  I know that a lot of you here tonight have faced the loss of a spouse or child.  Let us not be judgmental toward people.  Now, I am not talking about going out here and sinning.  Sometimes we handle things differently in life's problems and just because I may handle things differently than you do does not mean that my way is right is your way is wrong.

Peter was a big rough and tough fisherman.  He made the statement, “Lord, I will never deny You.”  The Lord said, “Yeah, you are going to.”

Day 13:  John 14:15-26

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

“The Holy Spirit Promised”

Jesus is telling them that He is going to go away but He is going to send a comforter.  He is going to send the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit back to them.  They did not know who He was.  Jesus was here in person and they did not know anything about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit of God, they were heartbroken, troubled, and afraid.  They did not know what was going to happen.  Jesus is trying to comfort them to let them know that He was going to send them another comforter.  The word “comforter” in the Greek means “someone that will come along side of us to help us.”  That is what the Holy Spirit of God does today.  He indwells us today.  He is here to help us.  If we did not have Him today, we would be in a mess.  If we did not have the Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost within us today to direct us, to guide us, to lead us, and to correct us; we would be in a mess.  We would be so afraid of everything.  The Holy Spirit of God comforts us and calms the fears in our lives.  The Bible says that perfect love casts out fear.

I am not saying this to down anyone.  Sometimes the fears that we have in life are because of our love for Jesus Christ is not at a level that it should be in our lives.  At a level where we can see how much He loves us and cares for us.  Likewise, where we can see how He will take care of us, and all of the things that He will do for us.  Our love has not got to that point yet and our understanding has not got to that point yet so instead of loving and trusting, we fear and worry.  That is a sign of immaturity.  I know that new converts are still yet immature when they first get saved, I can understand that.  The Lord wants us to mature.  My love for Him should be greater today than it was when I got saved.  My love for Him should be deeper today than it was the day I got saved.

My love for my wife should be deeper and more loving.  I should know her more today than I did 33 years ago.  Our love should be greater.  I understand her more and know more about her.  It is the same thing with the Lord.

As our understanding grows then our love grows.  The Holy Spirit is here to lead us, comfort us, guide us and teach us.  That is why He is here.  He indwells Christian people, those of us that are saved.

Day 14:  Mark 14:32-36

“Jesus in the Garden”

 In verse 36:

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

Here He is in the garden and He has asked the disciples to stay here awhile and to watch and pray, but we know that they went to sleep.  He is praying saying “…Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.”

The question that we can ask ourselves today is this:  “Are we really concerned today about the Will of God?  Are we concerned about His will for our lives? Or are we just concerned about comfort, pleasure, things just for us or are we really wanting to do what God has asked us and commissioned us to do?”

There is a Will of God for your life.  There is a specific Will of God for everyone sitting here.  I know that it is God’s Will for everyone to be saved.  However, there also is a specific Will for your life and whatever that will is that God has set for your life and given you for your life; that is what you should be doing.  That is what you should be focusing upon; not all of the other things in life.  I know that we have to work.  I know that we have to raise families, kids and do all these other things.  I understand that.  What is more important to you in your life?  …to be comfortable?  Or …to do the Will of God?  What is more important to you in your life?  …to have things?  Or  …to do the Will of God?

How important to me is the Will of God in my life?  All of us have room to move up.  We do not think about what God wants us to do.  We want to think about all the other things.  We think about all the things that pertain to this world.  We miss out on a lot because fail to realize what the Will of God is for our lives.  When we do figure it out, sometimes we do not like it.  Therefore, we do not want to do it.

Jesus is making His final preparation.  If we will look at the life that He lived and the example that He set before us, I think that we can look at His example for our final preparation.  Our final preparation for death, we should be making today.  He knew that He was going to die in a matter of hours.  I do not know when I am going to die.  If we have not prepared to die, we should be preparing today because death may come.  Jesus spent more time with His family, and He spent more time praying.  He spent more time with the people around Him that He loved; not necessarily His blood family.  You will not read here in His last hours that they were around until He goes to the cross, but He spent time with those that He loved and He spent time with His heavenly Father.

In these days, that we are living in may very well be our last days and I think that they are.  We should be making our final preparations for death/to leave here.  We are going to be leaving here.  If we will take His example and take the example that He taught to the disciples about loving one another, being a servant, about all the things that He taught in just these few little verses that we looked at tonight.  It is important to be prepared for this thing called death because it is going to come.

The Bible tells us that it is not God’s Will that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

If you have not made final preparations, then this will be a good time for you to do that.
