Journey to the Cross

Day 1 – Day 7

 Wednesday, February 28, 2007

 Bob Bradley

Day 1:  Matthew 5:1-3

As we start on this journey, the journey is going to start just a few days before Jesus Christ is going to go to the cross and die.  Last week we talked about “humility.”  In day one, which was last Wednesday, our scripture came from Matthew 5:1-3 and we talked about down through verse 12.

1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:

2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you , and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

One of our verses was verse three.

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

As we talked about last, when we are bankrupt spiritually and we recognize that, then we will ask the Lord Jesus Christ for help and He will help us.  If we are spiritually destitute that means that we understand that we are spiritually destitute and when we recognize that and we accept the fact that we are spiritually destitute then we will seek help and when we do that then that makes us a candidate to be able to go to heaven.  That is saying that we need to lay aside pride.

When you and I start this journey, if we don't lay aside pride to start with then forty days from last Wednesday we won't know anymore about Jesus Christ or anymore about self than we did when we started.  We cannot get anywhere with the Lord Jesus with pride in our lives.  He cannot tell us anything, He cannot teach us anything if we have pride in our lives.

He says here:

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Did you ever think about the kind of shape that you would be in if Jesus Christ had not saved you?

Did you ever think about the shape that we would be in tonight had we not had a Savior that loved us?

Can you remember times in your life where that you could not fit in this verse of scripture; you would not fit into the class of being poor in spirit?  In other words, you were lifted in pride, you were filled with pride, your life was being controlled by pride, your thoughts and attitudes were being controlled by pride; have there been times in your life like that?  If we would all be honest, we all could say that is true.

When we are lifted up in pride then we get nowhere with God.  We need to remember how that Jesus Christ really is and how humble that He expects you and me to be.  If we are going to receive anything from Him, we are going to have to be humble people.  We cannot be lifted up in pride.  We cannot be smart-allecs and cocky people walking around with a chip on our shoulder all the time.  We cannot be people like that.  If we are people like that then we will never get anywhere with God.  We need to be humble.  Just as Jesus was humble, we need to be humble.

Day 2:  John 11:1-53

1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

4 When Jesus heard that , he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:

19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.

21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.

29 As soon as she heard that , she arose quickly, and came unto him.

30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.

31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

35 Jesus wept.

36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!

37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it , that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.

46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.

47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles.

48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

We are talking about Lazarus and our scripture came from John 11:1-53.  The particular verses, 25 and 26 says:

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

As you look at the whole story, sometimes when tragedies come in life, we think God is late.  Sometimes when tragedies come in life, we think that God is not on time.  Just as He was here with Lazarus, God had a purpose and God had a plan for what he was doing here with Lazarus by not being there to raise him from the dead at a particular time.  He was going to show the people who that He really was and that He had the power to raise him from the dead in order to show these folks that He was the Son of Almighty God.  If the Lord always did things for you and me right when we thought that He should do them, then that a lot of the glory that He would receive if we would just wait upon Him would be greater when He does it in His time than when He does things in our time frame.

He knows what He is doing.  He has a reason for what He is doing.  With Lazarus here, He had a reason for doing what He was doing.  Many times, we think that He is late.

You have heard the story about the woman coming to church or the man coming to church and said, “I really want you to ask God to hurry up and heal me because I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow.  I want Him to heal me before I go.”  Things do not work that way.  God does not work that way.  God will do things.  God does heal and God does great things, but He does them in His own time.  When we try to put pressure on God to try to get Him to do things as we think He should do things; it does not work.

We need to remember who that God is and that He has a plan.  If we will just remember that, then He will work things as they should be worked out and they will be worked out right.

In the story, here if Jesus would have come and healed Lazarus before He died then you know what would have happened?  What happened because Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead?  Many people got saved.  Many people turned to Jesus Christ because He raised Lazarus from the dead.

Many times, we miss out on the great big blessing and other people miss out because we want God to hurry up and do something.  Had He healed Lazarus before he died then He would not have had the opportunity to raise him from the dead.  All these folks here on this particular day saw the stone rolled away and Jesus just simply said Lazarus come forth.  All these folks would not have seen that, their faith would not have been increased, and they would not have believed Him as being the Messiah.

It is the same thing in our lives.  We want God to hurry up and do something, but God has a plan.  I do not always understand it.  I do not understand how it all is going to work out sometimes.  When we pray and seek the face of God and God speaks and says, “It's all going to be alright.”  I do not need to know how.  I do not need to know when.  That is none of my business.  The only thing that we need to do is just simply believe Him.  When I do that, God will work out things that are beyond my imagination and yours too.  God is a God that knows tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, I do not know that but God does.

If Lazarus had not died, many people would not have come to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, because of what they saw Jesus Christ do on this particular day.  How many times have we prayed, “God heal me.  God heal me.”  I have done that many times.  Many times the sickness that we may have, may bring more glory to God than being healed.

The Apostle Paul is a great example of that.  When he prayed and asked God to take away his thorn in the flesh and God said, “Paul my grace is sufficient for thee.”  We need to understand that God is not always going to heal us.  Every sickness that I have, God is not always going to heal me.  Some of them He may; some of them He may not.  We just need to simply believe Him and trust Him and have faith in Him; He is our Savior.  We are on this journey with Him.  When we simply follow Him, He will take care of us.

Day 3:  John 12:1-11

1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son , which should betray him,

5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?

6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

This is about when Mary took the oil and anointed the feet of Jesus.  Jesus says here in verse seven:

7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.

Here she is anointing His feet with the oil and doing some great things in preparation of Jesus Christ dying in a few days.  I do not know if you ever studied about the oil that this sister was using, but it was very costly.  It was a costly bottle of oil that she was pouring upon His feet.  She was not worrying; she was not thinking about the cost, but she was thinking about worshiping Jesus Christ.

I think sometimes that we worry too much about the cost and we do not worry about worshiping Him.  Do not misunderstand; things have to be done in decency and order.  Whatever I have tonight in the bank, if I have a whole lot or if I do not have fifty cents; it all belongs to Jesus Christ.  I would not have a penny of it and you would not either had not God enabled us, blessed us to be able to work, and to be able to have done what we have done; you wouldn't have a dime tonight.  You would not have a roof over your head if it were not for the God of heaven.

I have heard people say, “I've worked for it all of my life.  It is mine.  I'm going to do what I want to with it.”  I would not say that if I were you.  There might be another man, another woman spending your money because you may be six foot under somewhere. We need to understand that what I have, I need to give the best in my worship and in my honor of the Son of God.  Give my best.

Mary gave her very best in her worship, in her honor, of Almighty God.  Jesus said to let her alone.  Judas said, “Why didn't we take this oil and sell it for three hundred pence and give it to the poor?  He was not worrying about worshiping and honoring Jesus Christ.  He was a thief.  He carried the bag.  He was the treasurer.  He was a thief.  He was concerned about what went into the bag because if nothing went into the bag; He could not steal nothing out of it.  He was not worried about the poor.  He was not worried about honoring or worshiping Jesus Christ.  The only thing Judas was worried about was number one.

If I do not get past the things in my own desires, my own lusts, and my own needs; if I do not get past those things then we will never give God our best.  We will give Him our second best or our third best.  We think that He will accept that, but God does not do that.  Either we will give Him our best or He does not accept second best, or third best.

This dear woman gave the best.  She gave something that was very costly.  She could have sold this oil for a lot of money, but she took it and poured it on His feet in honor and worshiping Him.  If you were there on that night, you could have smelled the aroma of this oil and you could have seen all the things that were going on.  It was probably a very solemn time.  Yet, she was not worrying about wasting because what she was giving to the Lord Jesus Christ was not wasting.

Sometimes we think that what we give, whether it is our time, our money, or whatever it may be; sometimes we think that is just wasted.  If I love the Lord Jesus Christ, I'm following Him, I'm reverencing Him, I'm worshiping Him, He's living on the inside of me; what I give Him, honors Him, and God will bless me for what I give Him.  What I give Him and honor Him with is never wasted.  We need to remember that.

Day 4:  Matthew 26:1-5

1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples,

2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified.

3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas,

4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him .

5 But they said, Not on the feast day , lest there be an uproar among the people.

Verse 4 says:

4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him .

We are getting real close to the last day of His life.  After He raises Lazarus from the dead, the opposition arose.  His notoriety was because Bethany was close to Jerusalem, which is where the Jews went to worship.  Not only that but the Holy Day was about to commence.  There were thousands of people around here and not all of them saw what He did but a lot of them heard what He did.  The opposition starts to grow after He raised Lazarus from the dead.

Did you ever think that if you were laying out the trip, if you were plotting out the course, if you were setting the direction that Jesus was going to go and that He was going to come and make an atonement for our sins; if you would have been God would you have plotted this course?  You probably would not have and I probably would not have either.  If we were doing it we would have said, “Hey, you are going to be born in Bethlehem.  You are going to be born down there in a manger.  You are going to have to live a very poor life.  You are not going to own anything here on planet earth.”  We would not have plotted that course for Him.  We would not have probably had people try to kill Him and people lying about Him.  We would not have had people trying to trap Him.  We would not have done that, but God set this course for Him.  This is the road/journey that God had demanded for His Son to go on.  As it is getting closer to the time that they are going to kill Him, the opposition grows.

Our lesson continues: they were talking together, they were consulting together, they were trying to figure out how to kill Him, how to do away with this man called Jesus.  Keep in mind that He knew where He was going.  He knew what was happening.  He knew when He was going to go to the cross, but He keeps on going.  He keeps on walking this journey.

What He was doing, He was doing because this was the Will of God, the Father.  The reason that He was doing that was not only was it God's Will, but that He loved us.  Ask yourself a question.  Jesus has taught His disciples that if they are going to live, they need to die.  If they are really going to have life, then they need to die to themselves.  Have we really done that?  Are we really on the journey with Jesus?  Have we really died to self?  Have we really been made alive in Jesus Christ?  Are we really following in His steps?  He is going to die here in just a few days.  He has told His disciples that if you really want to live, you need to die to self.  If we are ever going to live spiritually, we have to die to self; to our desires, passions, all the things that we have all about self.  We have to die out to that.  If we do not ever do that, then we are not following in the steps of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Even though all these things were coming at Him and the opposition was heating up, that did not take His eyes off the goal.  He did not deviate from the plan of God.  He stayed with the plan of God.  He was still yet marching towards the cross.

A lot of times when things come in our life and we may have our eyes upon the goal, but then problems come and situations come and many times we may get off of the path a little bit.  Jesus was not distracted at all.

Day 5:  John 12:12-19 and Zechariah 9:9

Palm Sunday

John 12

12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt.

16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him.

17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record.

18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.

19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

Zechariah 9

9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

The Bible says:

13 ...Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,

This is when Jesus Christ went into Jerusalem and He was sitting upon an ass/donkey.  The Bible tells us that people went before Him and they laid their coats as He went down the street.  They broke off Palm branches as He went down the street.  They cried out one word, “Hosanna” this means “Lord, save us now” in the Greek.  They were saying that this is the Messiah, the King of Israel.  The same crowd a few days later is going to be crying “Crucify Him.  Crucify Him.”

Day 6:  Matthew 21:12-27

12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,

16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.

18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.

19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

20 And when the disciples saw it , they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

 Verse 12 says:

12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

He goes into the temple on Monday, if I understand things correctly, before He is going to die; He sees the animals and the moneychangers.  He turns over the moneychangers’ tables.  He takes a scourge and He runs out the cattle that's in there and He said, “...It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”  He drives them all out.

That is a good lesson for us today.  I think it would be wise in a lot of churches today if we would get rid of some of the things that we are doing on the inside of God's house; run some of the things out that's on the inside of God's house.  It is degrading.  This is not a house of merchandise.  This is not a place to do a lot of things that people thinks we should do sometimes.  This is God's house.

Day 7:  Matthew 22:15-46

15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man : for thou regardest not the person of men.

17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

22 When they had heard these words , they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:

26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

27 And last of all the woman died also.

28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

33 And when the multitude heard this , they were astonished at his doctrine.

34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question , tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,

42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?

45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions .

In verse 33:

33 And when the multitude heard this , they were astonished at his doctrine.

When you read what He is talking about and teaching, there were many people that He was touched by.  Many people, when they heard what Jesus was saying and teaching, it really touched them.  They were astonished at the authority and the doctrine He had.  The Word of God will get our attention if we will just allow.
